City of Birmingham Recycling
(Updated 2/1/2008)
All residents of single-family dwellings and those in multi-family dwellings less than 10 units, who receive city refuse collecting, qualify for curbside recycling.
Currently, the City of Birmingham has no recycling bins to distribute, but they will pick-up recyclable materials. Place your recyclables in bags or re-use a plastic tub for that purpose, and have them at the curb by 6AM on Wednesday morning. If they are not collected, call 3-1-1 and report a "missed recycling pickup." That will be forwarded to dispatch and with potentially a few calls, the drivers should get used to picking up your materials. They can also email recycling@aeconline.org for additional assistance. Materials that are accepted in the city program include:
- Mixed paper (cereal boxes, box packaged foods, phone books, magazines, office paper, junk mail, etc.)
- Newspaper
- Corrugated cardboard (broken down)
- Steel, aluminum, & tin cans
- Plastics 1-7 (now accepting ALL forms!), lids removed, contents emptied)
Recycling bins with these materials should be placed in the same location where residents put their trash for pick-up before 6 AM on any Wednesday. Recycling is picked up with the same trucks that are used for trash pick-up, but materials are brought to the local materials recovery facility, Birmingham Recycle & Recovery, which is the same place all local recycled materials are taken.
For additional information, please call the recycling hotline at 252-7581 or the City of Birmingham Recycling Coordinator Tori Lomax at 205-849-6756 or Don Lupo, who is the Director of the Mayor's Office of Citizens Assistance, Environmental Awareness & Recycling and can be reached through city hall at 254-2388. Additional materials can be recycled at the Downtown Birmingham Recycling Center, including Glass and Computers.
